Princess Iluka History
Formerly named Iluka, an Aboriginal word meaning "by the sea", the vessel was originally constructed by Ray Kemp in Tasmania in 1979, using Tasmanian Oak and Huon Pine. The timbers used in the construction of Iluka were logged and milled around 1964 in the Gordon River region in the southwest of Tasmania. This area is renowned for its unique Huon Pines – the most sought after boat building material due to its resistance to rot and borers.
The Huon Pine used in the construction of Iluka's hull is more than 750 years old and once it was harvested, was left to cure for two years before building began. The timber, which forms the keel, is one continuous piece of Spotted Gum.
